A little escape, every day. Family-run in Sussex since 2014.

How it started

From a small nursery to a day out in its own right

Upcountry began in 2014, when our Scaynes Hill site opened its gates as a nursery selling homegrown plants and gardening supplies to the local area.

A few years on and we have grown into a family-run garden centre like no other, with two Sussex stores, two cafes and a farm shop full of local produce. We are still family-run, and still happily a bit different: explore the London bus at Scaynes Hill, and by all means bring the dog. Both stores are family and pet friendly.

Come to browse plants, farm produce, gardening and pet supplies. Or just come for the day. Not an errand you rush, but a day you choose.

What you will find

Plants & gardening

Primarily British grown plants, from bedding and herbaceous to trees, bulbs and seeds, alongside pots, compost, tools and garden furniture. Our staff are generous with their gardening knowledge, so ask away.

Shop plants

Pets & country store

Toys, treats, feed and accessories for dogs, cats and smaller companions, with poultry and smallholder feeds too. Horse lovers should head for Scaynes Hill, where our equine and country store stocks rugs, riding wear and tack.

Farm shop

The tastes of Sussex, nestled inside both garden centres: seasonal fruit and vegetables, dairy and meat, plus a pantry of sweet treats, teas and coffees. Scaynes Hill adds local beers, wines and a Sussex gin range.

Eat & drink

When you have shopped to your heart's content, rest your feet. Roost at Scaynes Hill and the Bakehouse Kitchen at Stone Cross serve breakfast, brunch and proper coffee seven days a week.

We would rather do a few things well than fill shelves for the sake of it. We work with smaller makers and local growers, we tell their stories, and we take the quality seriously without ever taking ourselves too seriously.
